Waxing is a form of hair removal that removes the hair from the root. Warm wax is applied to the skin; it is then removed pulling all the hair at once. Your skin may be a bit pink afterwards.
I take extra steps to minimize the resulting inflammation: a zinc-oxide barrier cream is used pre-wax, cbd oil (a fantastic anti-inflammatory) is applied post-wax, and most people calm down within a couple of hours.
I recommend to avoid liquid foundation and concealers for 24 hours after waxing; powder is totally fine. If waxing the body, it helps to wear loose fitting clothes afterwards, and let the area breathe.
Q: Will it make my hair grow back thicker or darker?
A: No. Your hair will grow back the same; possibly less/slower, and finer because the hair is pulled from the root.
Q: How long will it last?
A: You’ll be hairless in the area waxed for about a week and will be ready for a touch-up in 3-4 weeks
Q: How long do I have to let the hair grow?
A: For most, if the area is shaved to the skin, let the hair grow for 2-3 weeks. If the area has been plucked/waxed, let the hair grow for 3-4 weeks. Don’t trim: it’s better to have the hair too long than too short.
Q: What is the difference between waxing and threading?
A: Both remove hair from the root. Waxing pulls the hair at once, and threading is basically (really fast) plucking. The primary difference is that threading is purely mechanical. Whether one hurts more/less than the other seems to be a matter of opinion.
Q: Silly question, but does it hurt?
A: Not silly at all! We are pulling hair from the root, so it’s definitely not a massage, but it is fairly quick and the pain is generally short-lived. I do have a numbing lotion add-on available to help.
Q: I’m always a little sticky after waxing, how can I remove that?
A: I strive my best to remove all wax residue when waxing, but occasionally some may be left. Wax is oil soluble, so using any oil (olive oil, coconut oil, baby oil etc) or even a lotion on the area will help relieve the stickiness.
FYI: If you have hair there, we can probably wax it, including nostrils and ears ;p
For bikini and brazilian waxes, remember: the first time will be the worst. If you come in for a touch-up (4-6 weeks), it hurts about 50% less because the hair grows back about 50% less.
*** Please discontinue any retinols and prescription acne lotions 3 days prior to waxing. You must be off Accutane for at least 1 year before waxing.
Tips:
- Plan to wax at least 1-2 days prior to an event, not the day of.
- If you fill your brows, come with them filled so we can get your shape just right.
- Many people find that taking an anti-histamine (benadryl, claritin etc) 30 minutes prior to the wax helps with inflammation. Benadryl seems to work best but does tend to make people drowsy.
